The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary (A Novel)

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I’m behind where I want to be on book reviews for the back half of the year and I want to be caught up for the new year. So we’re going to post some reviews speed-dating style. If I have lots to say, I’ll go into more detail, but for some of the middle of the road reads for the year, I’ll keep my thoughts brief.

What it’s about:

Tiffy is in a tight situation and needs a place to live as soon as possible. Leon needs help paying the rent, but doesn’t really have the space to take in a roommate. But Leon works nights and only needs his bed during the day, so if he could find someone with an opposite schedule, he thinks he could make something work. Tiffy knows the arrangement is far from conventional, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Together, they strike up a friendship via sticky notes around the apartment as they come and go, passing like two ships in the night, and leftovers in the fridge. As one might suspect, things between them start to get serious, even though they’ve never met.

Why I decided to read it:

I found this one scrolling on a reading app. After a few darker thrillers, none of which were really doing it for me, I decided to take a detour into my second favorite genre: Romance. And I’m glad I did. This one got me excited to be reading again.

The Pros:

  • This story has an unconventional take on the one-bed trope. Between that and the blind date type feel of the story, it has such a cute, fun arc between two characters that you quickly find yourself rooting for.
  • The progression of strangers to lovers is entertaining and charming. It was unlike any other romance stories I’ve read and it really kept you wondering what was going to happen next.
  • The story reads really quickly, but doesn’t feel rushed. It was hard to put down when you keep wondering when they are finally going to meet and what they’re going to think of each other once they see one another.
  • The characters are interesting and engaging.
  • There’s a TV adaptation in the works, so now’s the time to read it before the show comes out!

The Cons:

  • As far as romance novels go, this one wasn’t as swoonworthy or as spicy as some others (though if that doesn’t bother you, it’s a good read!) I don’t really think it’s that much of a con, but it’s just not quite a 5 star read.

Final Thoughts:

While this book wasn’t overly remarkable as a novel, it was a fun rom-com. I hesitate to call it brain candy or a beach read, but this is about on par with that type of book. It’s absolutely not the kind of novel I regret reading – I really enjoyed it quite a bit, honestly – but I’d probably rate it just above middle of the road as far as romance novels go.
